Firmato in basso a sinistra con un serpente alato , il artist's cartello . le opere di lucas cranach the elder sono tanto varie e piene di incidenti quanto la sua carriera di artista . Da giovane , ha vissuto e lavorato a vienna da 1500 per 1503 , il periodo in cui entrò in contatto con la scuola del danubio , il cui sviluppo è stato molto influenzato dal suo stesso lavoro . Dopo 1505 ha lavorato come pittore di corte per federico il saggio , elettore di sassonia a wittenberg , e in questa cittadella della riforma tedesca istituì e diresse un grande e impegnato laboratorio . Oltre alle pale d'altare e ai quadri religiosi ha dipinto soggetti mitologici , scene e ritratti di genere , oltre a eseguire un considerevole corpus di opere grafiche . Il muro nero sul lato sinistro di questo dipinto è il risultato di una successiva riverniciatura , presumibilmente c'era un sipario in origine . Gli abiti decorati dei santi ( Margaret , Catherine , dorothy e barbara ) dare un carattere terreno al soggetto religioso .
